The Story of Obelisk IX : Gilded Rift
In Obelisk IX : Gilded Rift, I continue my exploration of monumental forms through the lens of erosion and revelation, inspired by the endurance of ancient obelisks against the ravages of time. This instalment features a commanding upper expanse of richly textured, gilded darkness – evoking the patina of aged metal – cleaved by a luminous rift of amber that separates it from the pale, scarred lower third. Here, the deliberate scratches carve into the surface like faint hieroglyphs or weathered inscriptions, symbolising the fragile traces of human intervention on eternal structures.
Employing layers of construction cements and acrylic glazes, it challenges viewers to engage with the tension between surface grandeur and subtle vulnerabilities, where each mark whispers of impermanence amid apparent solidity.
